Gel Nail Polish
Removal Procedure

Gel nail polish has become a common challenge for women’s Chevros Kadisha. Unlike traditional polish, which can be easily removed with acetone, gel polish is significantly more difficult to take off. When it first appeared, Chevros often spent considerable time trying to remove it—sometimes causing damage to the nifteres’ nails.

In response, many poskim advised leaving the polish in place. However, a simple and effective four-step removal process has since been developed. We encourage Chevros to use this method to remove gel nail polish and in doing so enhance kavod hameis.

Important: All four steps must be followed for the process to be effective.

1. File the surface of the nail polish to break the seal.
2. Apply gel polish remover to each nail.
3. Wait 5 minutes to allow the remover to take effect.*
4. Gently remove the polish using a nail scraper or cuticle pusher.

*Note: If the polish does not begin to bubble or peel during the waiting period, it is likely an acrylic or powder product—not gel—and should be left alone unless your Chevra is specifically trained to remove it.
